The
Impressionists are so universally admired today that it is difficult to
imagine the level of critical hostility they received in late-19th-century
France. This tour will give you an understanding of the Impressionists'
radical innovations in historical context. What was so shockingly modern
about their attention to the physical properties of vision and their
spontaneous vignettes of urban life? What was so new about this painting
practice? We answer these questions by focusing closely on some of the
better-known masterpieces of the Orsay collection. We study, among other
works, Manet's scandalous Olympia, Degas' dancers and laundresses, Renoir's
Bal du Moulin de la Galette, and Monet's Rouen Cathedral series.
Orsay Museum Impressionists tour Rates. €70 for individuals, or €60 per
person for parties of two or more. Includes price of admission. €20
