Travel Paris : Places to see - Bastille, Gare de Lyon, Vincennes

11th district (arrondissement) : Bastille

Bastille : The Place de la Bastille is the former location of the Bastille jail that was stormed by the people of Paris on 14 July 1789 (French national day), ... Remainings of the former monument basement can still be seen in the subway station. However the column in the middle is not paying tribute to this event... But to the 'Trois Glorieuses" riots that led to the overthrow of Charles X King in 1830. The names of the victims are written in golden letters on the column. A very boyant district with many bars and restaurants - A place reputated for its nightlife (Rue de Lappe, Rue de la Roquette, Faubourg Saint Antoine, Rue de Charonne).
Bastille Opera : The main opera house in Paris. The modern building was inaugurated on July 14, 1989 on the 200th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille. Reservation : + 33 (1) 72 29 35 35
Oberkampf Street : Another temple of nightlife. Oberkampf is a lively street lined with shops, restaurants, cafes & nightclubs - Don't miss the interior of the Charbon Cafe (Previously a coal & wine warehouse - "Charbon" meaning coal in French) for its beautiful 1900s decor - Adress : 109 Rue Oberkampf.
Bassin de l'Arsenal : A hidden place in Paris quite unknown to tourists - A quiet marina surrounded by peaceful gardens - A nice thing to do is to walk at summer time in this little sailing port.

12th district (Gare de Lyon, Bercy, Cours Saint Emilion)

Gare de Lyon & Train Bleu restaurant : Gare de Lyon is the main train station serving Paris (Mostly trains to and from South of France). It houses the famous restaurant - Le Train Bleu - located at the first floor. Andre Malraux granted the Train Bleu restaurant historical monument status in 1972 - The Belle Epoque decor is breathtaking (Sculptures and murals cover walls and ceilings) and the food refined ... Viaduc des Arts : The Viaduc des Arts runs from the Bastille Opera to the Jardin de Reuilly ... It is an old railway line that led once to Bastille train station (replaced by the Opera) and that has been turned into a very pleasant promenade. The arches now hosts art galleries and fashion designers ...
Faubourg Saint Antoine : Many furnitures shops, fashion designers & trendy bars, restaurants... A very boyant area. Don't miss the outstanding interior of the Barrio Latino bar : This little corner of Havana in the heart of the Bastille is all ready well-known to salsa aficionados. The spectacular 3000 m2 hacienda extends over 4 levels linked by a imposing staircase - Telephone : +33 (0)1 55 78 84 75.
Bercy village & Cours Saint Emilion : A forgotten part of Paris. The former location of what was once the largest wine market in the world ... Nowadays warehouses have been turned into shops & restaurants. Subway station : Cour Saint-Emilion. A few steps away don't miss the Fairground arts museum : An incredible and unique collection of fairground art, including German swings, merry-go-rounds and carousels provide the decor in which sculpted wooden horses, hundred-year-old bicycles and other objects become a playground in which adults can discover the different aspects of travelling fairs and how they once enabled people to live out their dreams. Vincennes : Chateau, Bois & Parc Floral

Bois de Vincennes : Few tourists know about but this park (woods would be more appropriate) of huge dimension is a part of Paris (It is almost three times larger than Central Park in New York, and four times larger than Hyde Park in London !) - At the north end of the Bois de Vincennes stands the Chateau de Vincennes recently renovated. It is the jogger paradise. Subway : Chateau de Vincennes.
Chateau de Vincennes : King Charles V the Wise decided the building of a castle at the end of the XIVth century... Centuries later Napoleon III decided its restoration (by Viollet le Duc). The dungeon recently renovated and is the highest on in Europe. Telephone : +33 (0)1 48 08 31 20
Parc Floral : A botanical garden just a few steps away from the Chateau. It hosts hundreeds of plants and flowers and is alo home of a free Jazz festival during summer. More information : +33 (0) 1 55 94 20 20
