Versailles Castle : Palace of Sun King

Versailles history

A hunting lodge was first built by Louis XIII father of the Sun King... a little chateau of brick, stone. The place became one of the King's favorite and the "modest" lodge was transformed into a real castle after a few years. Like his father, the Sun King Louis XIV liked this place and decided to appoint a new architect to make it the official residence of the Court of France : The New Chateau work was handled by Le Vau who decided to wrap the old chateau in a second building whose uniformly white stone facades served as a fine garden setting. After 10 years of Work... Versailles became the official residence of the Court of France, supplanting the palaces at the Louvre and Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Around 1770, Jacques-Ange Gabriel built the Opera and began reworking all the facades on the Castle. Only the right wing, which threatened to crumble, was executed.

Versailles facts and figures

The Chateau de Versailles is one of the largest castles in the world. The Chateau de Versailles has ... more than 2,000 windows, 700 rooms, 1250 fireplaces, 67 staircases and more than 1,800 acres of park. The paintings, tapestries , sculptures ,furniture of this fabulous castle , have been executed by the best Italian and French artists of the time.  Inside, the grand staircase known as Grand Degré was begun in 1772, but only recently completed in 1985.

In 2005 about eight million visitors have discovered this architectural and cultural masterpiece. Versailles and its gardens remains one of the tourists favorite visit when coming to Paris.

Dominating the inside of the palace is the Hall of Mirrors. Mirror was as precious as diamond when these were made. 60,000 visitors stream through the palace every day.

Opening hours : The Palace is open every day except Mondays, on certain French public holidays, or when official ceremonies are held. 1 Nov - 31 Mar : 9am to 5.30pm 1 Apr - 31 Oct : 9am to 6.30pm
