Versailles history
A hunting lodge was first built by Louis XIII father of the Sun King... a little chateau of brick, stone. The place became one of the King's favorite and the "modest" lodge was transformed into a real castle after a few years. Like his father, the Sun King Louis XIV liked this place and decided to appoint a new architect to make it the official residence of the Court of France : The New Chateau work was handled by Le Vau who decided to wrap the old chateau in a second building whose uniformly white stone facades served as a fine garden setting. After 10 years of Work... Versailles became the official residence of the Court of France, supplanting the palaces at the Louvre and Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Around 1770, Jacques-Ange Gabriel built the Opera and began reworking all the facades on the Castle. Only the right wing, which threatened to crumble, was executed. It strictly obeyed the rules of French classical architecture, as seen in its colonnaded pavilion. Inside, the grand staircase known as Grand Degré was begun in 1772, but only recently completed in 1985. - Click here to book your transfer from Paris to Versailles
